Factors for Success Case Studies

Factor for Success case studies are available below to download. These case studies are based on eight schools who have had successfully begun to use the Schools Global Footprint Calculator to measure the size of their school's ecological footprint. They give information on what made measuring their footprint successful and, in some cases, how they have linked the footprint work into the curriculum.

Six key factors were commonly cited during the interviews as being key to successfully measuring a schools footprint - support; personal commitment; integration across the curriculum; ambition within Eco-Schools; Excellence within Eco-Schools; Time

Special Schools

Glencryan Special School in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire used the Schools Global Footprint resources to raise awareness about footprinting and build on healthy living initiatives in the school. The project gave pupils an opportunity to contextualise their learning about food and the environment. The school found that the food for a school lunch can travel as much as 360,000 miles! Heather Martin, S5 Teacher said, "Pupils were very surprised at just how far their food had travelled, which helped them to understand why the food they grew [in the school grounds] has such a low footprint." To find out how the school used the footprint resources take a look at the Glencryan School Case Study.
